Three Original Netflix Shows to Watch or Re-watch for Their Use of Classical Music

Netflix has always been at the forefront of the streaming game, especially when they first started releasing their original shows in 2012. Since then, some of their original shows have become critically acclaimed award winners. Being original content, many of them have their own incredible soundtracks to use, but often times we need other music to complement that soundtrack or the narrative. One genre of music that is often used to fill in that empty space is classical music.

Any director or composer could easily decide to throw in some famous classical pieces in a scene to fill the space, which is why the way the music is utilized is incredibly important. Here are three Netflix original shows that deserve a watch or revisit, for their unique blend and use of classical music:

 The Crown (2016) –

Genre: Historical Drama (Currently at 4 seasons)

Directed by Peter Morgan, this historical drama portrays the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to the Queen’s reign into the 21st century.

Bridgerton (2020) –

Genre: Regency Romance, Period Drama (Currently at 1 season)

Directed by Chris Van Dusen, this American period drama is based on a novel by Julia Shonda Rhimes of the same name. The narrative revolves around the competitive world of Britain’s high society, during the social season where high society members would often hold balls and other social events. The show follows the eldest daughter of a powerful family as she debuts into the marriage market.

Squid Game (2021) –

Genre: Survival, Thriller, Horror, Drama (Currently at 1 season)

Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this South Korean survival drama follows a divorced and indebted father, who is invited to play a series or deadly children’s games for a large cash prize. The contest consists of 456 players, all in financial debt, risking their lives to win the cash sum of 45.6 billion won (~ 38 million dollars).

Each of the recommended Original Netflix shows have used classical pieces in their own unique and extraordinary way. The way the music is used can entirely change the way you perceive a scene in visual arts, enhancing the experience as a whole. Which one would you watch?
